Day 50 - Farewell Sydney, Hello Adelaide

With the events of last night, I forgot to include an important detail in yesterday’s blog - there was a big Pokémon event in Sydney yesterday, meaning that there were hundreds of people walking around the city with Pikachu hats on. I liked this, but also had questions….

Anyway, back to today. The mood at breakfast was obviously strange - some of my group had been at Bondi yesterday, and generally everyone was just shocked at what had happened.

I really wanted to do the Sydney Tower Skywalk whilst in the city, but had found out that you are not allowed to do it solo (for reasons I still don’t understand). I had therefore asked the group if anyone wanted to do it with me. Ian, who had done parkrun with me on Saturday, was keen, even though he had been just a hundred metres or so from the shooting yesterday. As such, after checking out of the hotel, we walked to the Sydney Tower for an adventure.

It was not straightforward to find the entrance to the tower, but once inside we rode the elevator up and enjoyed great views from the observation deck.

It was then time to get a harness on, as well as a super attractive blue jumpsuit, and to go through all the safety stuff for our walk outside.

Caelan and Maryam were our guides and were great! We had a group of nine of us, and all together climbed up some stairs from the main observation deck, and outside about 260m above the ground.

The views were absolutely amazing, and it was a wonderful view of the city. I really felt that I got a sense of the geography of the city, as well as learning fun facts too. We got lots of photos (taken by Maryam as there are super strict rules about not taking anything out with you) and got to walk and jump on glass platforms.

I really do not have a fear of heights (I might need to develop more of a fear…), and it was all very chilled out up there. Unlike other tower walks I have done, there were big safety barriers and no leaning off or anything else - it really was all about enjoying the views.

Ian and I had time for a quick drink after we got back down to earth, and then went back to the hotel to catch the coach to the airport. The whole airport experience was super smooth once again, and the flight to Adelaide uneventful. The only thing that blew my mind was that the time difference from Sydney to Adelaide is 30 minutes. Go figure. My only other point of note is that I did enjoy some of the Christmas decorations in Adelaide airport.

It was a short coach ride to our hotel in the city, where we all checked in and then headed out to find some dinner. I annoyingly chose my restaurant by proximity to a geocache…. Which meant that I missed seeing Joe Root by mere minutes. Gutting! He was literally just at the restaurant two doors down from where I was enjoying a very delicious gnocchi meal!

Anyway, I met up with some of the others for a drink before turning in for the night. Tomorrow I get to explore this city some more, and attend a cricket forum.
