Day 69 - Le Petit Train de Metz
I was very impressed with the breakfast spread this morning - lots of cute little pastries and general nom-iness. I was a little confused by the presence of M&Ms, but like with the Prosecco offer in Bratislava, appreciated their availability.
The weather is still pretty rubbish here, but I took a lovely walk back into the centre of the city, getting lots of AdLabs on my way, which was a great way to notice lots of the details on buildings. As I said yesterday, there is so much history here, as Metz really does seem to have often been on the front line of European geopolitics.
My main aim for today was to ride the little train that I had seen yesterday - my third little train in the past fortnight! Annoyingly, one was just leaving the square by the cathedral as I arrived, so I had a couple of hours to wait until the next one. I popped into the impressive tourist information office (photo below) for ideas and found out that I was very close to the main city museum.
I therefore went to the museum, and was amazed by just how impressive a museum it was. I had just about finished going through the Roman section when I had to leave though, as the museum closed for lunch!
I figured it would be a good idea for me to find some lunch too, and by chance I ended up in what I discovered was a vegetarian cafe. The food was SO good though - I had a delicious smoked salmon and broccoli quiche.
By the time I had finished lunch, it was time to go on the little train. I think this little train was my favourite so far, as it was a whole hour around the city. I’m not quite sure how local drivers feel about the little train on the roads, but we really did pick up some speed in places!
I learnt lots on the train - from how good the Metz handball team is, to how the train station was built by the Germans and so has an apartment for the Kaiser Wilhelm II in it, to why there are dragons all over the city!
After the little train, I figured that I should head closer to my hotel as the weather was definitely getting worse. I stopped off at a chocolate shop (I have no idea how I am going to get my purchases home looking as pretty as they do now…), and pottered back.
I’ve had a chilled evening since, but am looking forward to a big day tomorrow. I believe that my trip to Luxembourg will be my 20th country on this trip (UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France and Luxembourg! Although you can sub in Czechia for the UK if you count me going through it….), and I should also get my 1000th geocache of the trip too!
