Day 13 - Five Trains to Copenhagen
Fuelled by another excellent breakfast, I headed to Bremen station for a fairly long day of travelling. I did manage one final cache before leaving the city, of course - it would be rude not to as it was actually in the station.
The first train took me to Hamburg - it was a very uneventful journey spent catching up with episodes of ‘The Rest Is Politics’. I was then quite proud of my efforts to use the Hamburg S bahn to cross the city to Hamburg Altona, where my next train was leaving from.
Train three was from Hamburg Altona to Flensburg (For the record, I am counting the S Bahn as a train…..). ‘Don’t you know that there is a direct train from Hamburg to Copenhagen?’ I hear you cry. Well, yes….. the problem was that I discovered a couple of days ago that they were ALL fully booked, so I had to find a less direct route. So - to Flensburg! I very nearly ended up in Kiel rather than Flensburg, as the train did a sneaky division half way, but I’m pleased to report that I moved myself to the Flensburg-bound half just in time.
At Flensburg, it became very apparent that lots of other people had been forced into the same route as me, and the train was…. Cosy. Luckily, I had thought ahead and made a seat reservation, and ended up sitting with a lovely Danish man and his two daughters. We chatted a lot (he is a teacher too!) and I was taught a new card game that I joined in with. It was a lot of fun, although I don’t know how I feel about kings being low here….. I’m all about the feminism of queens being the highest card buuuuuuut…..
With an hour to kill in Fredericia, I learned that there is not a lot near the station in Fredericia! Lunch was therefore courtesy of 7Eleven.
The final train of the day took me from Fredericia to Copenhagen. Again, it was super busy, and it looked like I was going to be standing when it turned out that the carriage I had a booked seat in didn’t exist. Luckily though, I did manage to nab a free seat quite quickly, and was able to enjoy the views.
My hotel in Copenhagen is very near the station, so I soon checked in when I got to the city. I took a recommendation from the front desk, and went to a traditional Danish restaurant for dinner, where I ordered the veal schnitzel with peas and potatoes. It was delicious, but the portion was HUGE so I didn’t even get close to finishing it.
After dinner, I took a short walk (to pick up a couple of caches….. obviously….) and am now back planning my adventures for tomorrow. It promises to be a fun-filled day.
